Where In The Town: JOMY Safety Products

Snow, rain, and sleet couldn't keep me from heading out on my weekly Where in the Town trip. After brushing the snow off the Rambler and turning up the heater, I took the turnpike up to Boulder to check out a company that helps save people from fires around the world.
JOMY Safety Products makes some really amazing products, which can help you quickly and safely make your way out of a burning building. When it comes to fire escapes, Paul Enright, the President of JOMY, says nobody does it better. "We do fire escapes, everything from portable fire devices to full fledged staircases hung on the exterior of buildings. Everything is aluminum or stainless steel."

The company offers a wide variety of devices, but one that Enright showed me was pretty impressive. They call it the stick ladder because it folds up into an easy to carry plank. "All you do is open it up," Enright said. "Once you open it up it locks in place. This ladder is actually stronger than any ladder on the American market. The highest rated ladder in the US market is 350 pounds this will support a 1,000 pounds and 650 pounds per rung."

As Enright showed me, JOMY's ladders can be placed on the side of buildings, to offer quick escape routes. "They look like a drain pip on the tip of a home. The handles are installed up high. This ladder actually goes 300 feet and support two 250 pound people."

JOMY has also developed special features to make their ladders safer. "It's a fixed ladder with a full restraint system. This device actually clips onto a climbing harness and allows a climber to get up the ladder and if they slip it locks up and prevents a fall."

The ladders have been used on Navy boats and in rescue efforts at Ground Zero, following September 11th. Enright says his company has even installed them for security purposes for the Secret Service. "We have one of these on Dick Cheney's bedroom in Washington, D.C."

The company has also created fire escapes which have been installed at Folsom Field at the University of Colorado at Boulder, as well as multi story buildings across the country. With all the work, they've created a high tech workshop. Enright gave me a tour. "This is a computerized cutting machine. Every hole that is put into our product for fasteners are done on this machine. We start of with an architectural drawing and then convert it into a computer diagram. Then we feed the profile through this machines and it instructs the drill bit where to go, what to do, which bits to choose. They come out of here and they're ready to go to the assembly area."
